Al Hikma University Studies the Impact of Social Media on Medical Students in Yemen

Sana’a, Yemen Al Hikma University conducted an academic research study examining the impact of social media use on mental health and academic performance among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine in Sana’a, Yemen.

The study was carried out as a partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree requirements. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 188 medical students through self-reported questionnaires covering demographic characteristics, social media usage habits, perceived impacts, and academic performance indicators.

The findings revealed statistically significant associations between age, educational level, academic use of social media, and structured usage periods with the average daily time spent on social media platforms (p < 0.05). Younger students and those in advanced academic years tended to spend more time online, while organized usage schedules were linked to moderate use. No significant associations were found with gender, marital status, or socioeconomic status.

The study was supervised by Dr.Amr A.Alkhorasani Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Al Hikma University, and Ass.Prof. Muneera Shaher, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Addiction Treatment Specialist.

The research highlights the need for targeted interventions and awareness programs to regulate social media use among medical students, aiming to support mental well-being and enhance academic performance in demanding educational environments.
